Can an Amino Acid IV Drip Help When You Aren't Eating Well? The Principles and Effects of Nutritional Support
Amino acid IV drips can supplement protein-building nutrients but cannot replace meals. Learn how they work, when they may be considered, and key precautions.

Hello.
I am Dr. Kim Dajeong, director of Cordia Clinic, a private single-room IV therapy clinic in Yeoksam-dong.

In busy daily life, there are times when we skip meals, or when stress and fatigue take away our appetite.
Especially if you can't eat properly for several days, you may feel weak and tire easily.
In these situations, some people consider an amino acid IV drip to support their nutrition.
So, does an amino acid IV drip actually help make up for a nutritional shortfall?
Today, we'll look at the role amino acids play in the body and the situations where IV therapy may be helpful.
1. What role do amino acids play in the body?
Amino acids are the basic building blocks of protein.
Protein from foods such as meat, fish, eggs, and beans is broken down into amino acids during digestion and absorbed into the body.
The absorbed amino acids are then used for a variety of physiological functions.
① Maintaining muscle and body tissue
Amino acids are used to build protein in muscle and other body tissues.
② Repairing damaged tissue
When the body repairs damaged tissue, it also needs new protein.
③ Producing enzymes and hormones
Amino acids serve as the raw materials for making the enzymes needed for metabolic reactions, as well as some hormones.
For this reason, getting enough protein and amino acids is important for keeping the body functioning normally.
2. Why does the body tire when you don't eat properly?
When food intake decreases, the supply of calories, protein, vitamins, and minerals the body needs can also drop.
In particular, if you can't eat enough for a long time, it can affect the balance between protein synthesis and breakdown in the body.
The body draws on stored nutrients to secure the energy and nutrients it needs, but if nutritional intake stays low, muscle loss and reduced physical stamina can occur.
That said, skipping a meal or two does not cause a serious nutritional deficiency.
What matters is how long, and to what extent, your food intake has decreased.
3. How can an amino acid IV drip help?
An amino acid IV drip is a preparation that delivers several types of amino acids through a vein. Our clinic uses Armix injection.
Unlike regular meals, it bypasses digestion and absorption in the gut and delivers amino acids directly into the bloodstream.
Some amino acid injections approved in Korea are used to supply amino acids in cases of hypoproteinemia, malnutrition, and before and after surgery.
Especially for patients who are not getting enough protein or who have difficulty with nutritional intake, it may be considered as a supplementary option after medical evaluation.
Since amino acids are the raw materials for protein synthesis in the body, supplying the amino acids that are lacking can be one part of nutritional support.
However, an amino acid IV drip alone cannot replace all the calories, vitamins, fats, and carbohydrates you would get from meals.
Also, getting an IV drip does not mean fatigue will recover immediately. If the cause of fatigue is lack of sleep, stress, or another condition, managing that cause comes first.
4. When should you consider an amino acid IV drip?
An amino acid IV drip is not necessarily a required treatment just because you often skip meals.
However, if nutritional intake is insufficient during recovery from illness or surgery, or if continued reduced food intake creates a need for protein supplementation, it can be considered based on the judgment of your healthcare provider.
Whenever possible, getting nutrition through food or oral nutritional supplements comes first.
Whether parenteral (IV) nutritional support is needed should be decided by considering nutritional status, digestive function, underlying conditions, and other factors together.
Also, patients with kidney or liver dysfunction, or with heart failure, must be even more careful in deciding the infusion components and volume.
5. Cordia Clinic provides IV therapy in a private single room
When considering IV therapy, it matters not only which ingredients are given but also whether you can rest comfortably during treatment.

Cordia Clinic operates private single-room IV spaces.
Because you receive IV therapy in your own independent space without sharing it with other patients, the setting suits people who value personal rest and privacy.
Before IV therapy, we also check your eating habits, general health, and underlying conditions, and decide whether an IV is needed through an individualized consultation.
Because the infusion rate must be considered along with the ingredients and dose for amino acid IV drips, it's important to administer them in a way that suits each patient's condition.
Cordia Clinic aims to carefully review each patient's condition and provide a comfortable treatment environment.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can an amino acid IV drip replace meals?
No. An amino acid IV drip alone cannot supply all the calories, vitamins, fats, and carbohydrates you need from a meal. Amino acids are raw materials for protein synthesis in the body and can be one part of nutritional support.
What role do amino acids play in the body?
Amino acids are the basic building blocks of protein. They are used for protein synthesis in muscle and other body tissues and for repairing damaged tissue. They also serve as raw materials for making some enzymes and hormones.
Why do you feel run down when you don't eat properly?
When food intake decreases, the supply of calories, protein, vitamins, and minerals can drop as well. If low nutritional intake continues, muscle loss and reduced physical stamina can occur, but skipping a meal or two alone does not cause a serious deficiency.
When is an amino acid IV drip worth considering?
It can be considered on a healthcare provider's advice when nutritional intake is insufficient during recovery from illness or surgery, or when protein supplementation is needed. Skipping meals often is not, by itself, a reason to use it. Whenever possible, nutrition from food or oral nutritional supplements comes first.
Will fatigue recover right away after an amino acid IV drip?
No. Getting an IV drip does not mean fatigue will recover immediately. If the cause is lack of sleep, stress, or another condition, managing that cause comes first.
Do I need to be careful if I have kidney or liver problems?
Yes. If you have kidney or liver dysfunction or heart failure, the infusion components and volume must be decided even more carefully. Whether parenteral nutritional support is needed is determined by considering nutritional status, digestive function, underlying conditions, and other factors together.
