Can a Concentration IV Drip Help With Studying and Work? A Look at Memory- and Brain-Function Ingredients
Explains which ingredients in concentration IV drips relate to brain function, what clinical studies show for healthy people, and what to check before treatment.

Hello, I am Dr. Dajeong Kim, Director of Cordia Clinic.

“I read the book, but nothing seems to sink in.”
“My focus drops every afternoon and my head feels foggy.”
If you are a student preparing for exams or an office worker with a heavy workload, you have probably experienced these symptoms at least once.
In particular, lack of sleep or irregular meal times can cause reduced concentration and fatigue at the same time.
Because of this, some people have recently become interested in concentration IV drips or brain-nourishing IV drips.
So, which ingredients are actually linked to brain function?
Some ingredients used in concentration IV drips are involved in neurotransmitter production, nerve function, and energy metabolism. However, these physiological roles do not guarantee improved concentration in healthy people.
1. Choline Alfoscerate: Acetylcholine, Involved in Memory and Learning
Choline alfoscerate (α-GPC) is an ingredient that supplies choline.

Choline is required for the production of acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter.
Acetylcholine is involved in several brain functions, including memory, learning, and attention.
Because of these properties, choline alfoscerate has been used in research on cognitive decline.
A randomized controlled trial published in BMC Geriatrics in 2024 gave 100 patients with mild cognitive impairment choline alfoscerate for 12 weeks.
The results showed that cognitive assessment scores improved significantly compared with the placebo group.

However, the study participants were patients with mild cognitive impairment, and an oral formulation was used.
*For reference, the injectable form's domestic approval is currently suspended in Korea.
2. Ginkgo Biloba Extract: Research on Cerebral Blood Vessels and Cognitive Function
Ginkgo biloba extract is an ingredient that has been studied for conditions related to cerebral and peripheral blood circulation.

The approved indications for Gitaco injection in Korea include symptoms such as memory decline and reduced alertness associated with cerebrovascular insufficiency.
A 2023 systematic review examined whether a specific standardized ginkgo biloba extract (EGb 761) may help cognitive function in patients with mild cognitive impairment.
The U.S. National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH) also considers the effect on cognitive ability in healthy people to be uncertain.

Therefore, while ginkgo biloba extract is an ingredient with research related to brain function, it cannot be described as an injection proven to improve test scores or work performance.
3. Vitamin B Complex: Nutrients for Nerve Function and Energy Metabolism
B-complex vitamins are also used in concentration IV drips.
Representative ingredients include fursultiamine (B1), dexpanthenol (B5), pyridoxine (B6), and hydroxocobalamin (B12), found in what is commonly known as the “garlic shot.”
Ingredient | Key Physiological Role |
Vitamin B1 | Energy metabolism of carbohydrates and nerve function |
Vitamin B5 | Coenzyme A synthesis and energy metabolism |
Vitamin B6 | Synthesis of multiple neurotransmitters |
Vitamin B12 | Maintenance of nerve function and red blood cell production |
In particular, a vitamin B12 deficiency can cause fatigue, anemia, and neurological symptoms.
A vitamin B1 deficiency can also lead to confusion and memory impairment.
Therefore, appropriate supplementation is important for people who are actually deficient.
However, there is limited clinical evidence that giving additional B vitamins to people whose vitamin levels are already adequate improves concentration.
4. What Students and Office Workers Should Check First
Nutrient deficiency is not the only reason concentration declines.

Sleep deprivation, overwork, irregular meals, and stress can all act together.
If fatigue persists for a long time, the possibility of conditions such as anemia, thyroid disease, or sleep disorders should also be checked.
If you are considering an IV drip, the following points are important.
Whether your current symptoms are actually related to a nutritional deficiency
Whether the type and dose of each ingredient are appropriate
Whether there are any interactions with medications you are currently taking
Whether compatibility between the injected ingredients has been confirmed
Ginkgo biloba extract requires consideration of bleeding risk in patients taking anticoagulants or antiplatelet agents. Vitamin B6 can also cause peripheral neuropathy when taken in large amounts over a long period.
IV injections also carry risks such as hypersensitivity reactions and phlebitis.
Closing Thoughts
Choline alfoscerate and ginkgo biloba extract, used in concentration IV drips, are ingredients supported by clinical studies related to cognitive function.
B vitamins also play essential roles in nerve function and energy metabolism.
However, supplying ingredients involved in brain function should be distinguished from actually improving concentration in healthy people.
For students and office workers in particular, adequate sleep, regular meals, and evaluating the causes of fatigue come first.
An IV drip is not a substitute for these basic health habits. It is a treatment that should be considered carefully, after confirming that there is a medically necessary reason for the ingredients.
Cordia Clinic has a private, single-person IV room set up for comfortable rest, with dim lighting, a warm mat, air conditioning, power outlets, a small desk, a cabinet, and disposable pillow covers.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will a concentration IV drip help my study results?
For healthy people, the effect of improving concentration or learning ability through IV administration has not yet been established. The fact that an ingredient is related to brain function alone does not mean that concentration or test scores will improve.
What is choline alfoscerate in a concentration IV drip?
Choline alfoscerate is an ingredient that supplies choline. Choline is required for the production of acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter, and acetylcholine is involved in various brain functions, including memory, learning, and attention. For these reasons, it has been used in research on cognitive decline.
Does ginkgo biloba extract improve cognitive ability in healthy people?
The effect of ginkgo biloba extract on cognitive ability in healthy people is still not clear. The U.S. National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH) also considers it uncertain. Ginkgo biloba extract is an ingredient with research related to cerebrovascular conditions, but it has not been proven to improve test scores or work performance.
Do B-vitamin IV drips improve concentration?
There is limited clinical evidence that adding B vitamins for people whose vitamin levels are already adequate improves concentration. However, if you are actually deficient in vitamin B12 or B1, you may experience fatigue, anemia, or memory impairment, so appropriate supplementation is important in cases of deficiency.
Is nutrient deficiency the only cause of poor concentration?
No. Sleep deprivation, overwork, irregular meals, and stress can all act together. If fatigue persists for a long time, the possibility of anemia, thyroid disease, or sleep disorders should also be checked.
What should I check before getting a concentration IV drip?
Check whether your current symptoms are actually related to a nutritional deficiency, whether the type and dose of each ingredient are appropriate, and whether there are any interactions with medications you are taking. IV injections also carry risks such as hypersensitivity reactions and phlebitis. You should also confirm that the injected ingredients are compatible with one another.
